Be

Be the apple tree
in the middle of nowhere.
Be the brightest star for miles.

Be the only one
for all the lonely ones
homeward bound.

Be the go-to guy
in the middle of mayhem.
Trust you'll find some inner peace.

Be the friend they need,
leave a trail of seeds
homeward bound.

(Hum Chorus)

Be the you I know
every day everywhere you go.
See beyond and tell them so.

Be the sun and moon.
Carve out a detour route
homeward bound.

Be the can-do kind
in the middle of doubters.
Be the light that leads the way.
Be the try again
long as it all ends
homeward bound.

(Hum Chorus)

Live the way you would
if you did it all over.
Find a town that speaks to you.

All you’ll ever want
you've already got
homeward bound.

(Hum Chorus)

Lakes and Rivers (From upcoming CD, Be)

all the time in the world
not one care
blue above
green out there

some stays in
some rolls off
skipping stones
carrying on

just along for this glorious ride
shallow water till you step inside

some are takers
some are givers
some are lakes
and some are rivers

standing still
not for long
brave as a branch
blank as a brick wall

just along for the fireworks
tiny blanket but we’ll make it work

chorus

warm slow rain
starts collecting
pulling the pier
tugging space

what to do with this bottomless view
can we be both or just one of the two

just along for this glorious ride
shallow water till you step inside

chorus

Snow

I can see the cross
that they stuck
in the mud
on the side
of the road
to remember me.

I can see the winter
that you're watching
out the window
as you dream
through the day
while you work.

I didn't mean to leave so soon
I would've never let you go
I should've learned to drive in the snow
oh...

I can see the chair
at the table
that you walk by
and you never
let anyone
sit there.

I can see the dress
on the hanger
in the closet
and you watch it
to remember us
walking.

(Chorus)

I can see the wonder
in your eyes
as you lie
in our bed
with your hands
behind your head
and the blanket
to your chest.
And you stare right
through me
'cause you don't know
I'm here, still.

(Chorus)

Let Her Go

He put that fire out in the city
and he carried out a lady.
He did the best he could
then he went home
to his wife and baby.

It was one minute of one hour,
one hour of one day,
one day of one month
a year ago today.

Let her go...let her go....

He drives too fast on some days,
too slow on others.
He's deep in thought about families,
daughters, sisters, and mothers.

It was one minute of one hour,
one hour of one day,
one day of one month
a year ago today.

Let her go...let her go...let her go....

Maybe he'll try something new,
something nine to five.
Maybe he'll go back to school
to take up his mind.

He put that fire out in the city
and he carried out a lady,
and he heard her last words
"don't let go..."

Let her go...let her go...let her go....

It was one minute of one hour,
one hour of one day,
one day of one month,
a year ago today.

Yellow Envelope

My father is gone.
It's been a few years.
He never made it very far.

Others might say
he made it in his way,
but I know what he held in his heart.

When I was a child,
he did some time,
and he sent mom a song he wrote.

She read it sometimes,
kept it in a drawer,
with all his other cards and notes.

He wrote it on a yellow envelope:

"If someone should fall for you darling,
smile and say you're doing fine.
I don't know when,
but till we meet again,
tell all the world that you're mine."

Dad drove a cab,
a job he could keep.
Till someone held him up
and left him dying in the street.

They put him back together,
and by his side she stood,
he would have told her if he could.

"If someone should fall for you darling,
smile and say you're doing fine.
I don't know when,
but till we meet again,
tell all the world that you're mine."

My father made it through.
Wise guys always do.

He lived a few more years,
still he died too soon.
Not enough nurses to rooms.

"If someone should fall for you darling,
smile and say you're doing fine.
I don't know when,
but till we meet again,
tell all the world that you're mine."

He wrote it on a yellow envelope.

Wings

There's a town in the west
could be any town I guess
where the setting sun sings working men to sleep.

In the square there's a dance
Sunday best and half a chance,
but there's always something better on TV.

Running down the road at 4am to nowhere.
Got no wheels, but I got wings.
Got no wheels, but I got wings.

There's a band in the back,
blind faith and Jack,
and they've come to know the meaning of a deal.

There's a fly in my house,
for days he's been about
and I'm getting used to having him around.

Running down the road at 4am to nowhere.
Got no wheels, but I got wings.
Got no wheels, but I got wings.

I sit and watch the fly in here
and even when the chance is clear
he doesn't even notice
and since I know this I've been
looking for an open window I can get through
got no wheels, but I got wings,

Running down the road at 4am to nowhere.
but I got wings.
Got no wheels, but I got wings.

I See You In Your Room

I see you in your room
spraying your perfume
and I see you in your bed
with your eyes rolled back in your head.

Don't worry mother, I was only checking in
in case you wondered where I'd been.
mmm hmmm

Nice to meet you sir, I'm sorry I barged in.
I won't do it again.
mmm hmmm

Nobody's looking now, I think I'll take a walk,
anywhere I want to.
All the kids at school can't wait to go home.
I want a home to want to go to.
Ooo Ooo, Ooo Ooo Oooo

I see you in your hell.
Sometimes I wish you'd yell.
I suppose you're blaming me.
For what you chose to be (you can't blame me).

And it's crazy.
It's crazy in your mind.
I can see your world
spinning in your eyes.

Nobody's looking now, I think I'll take a walk,
anywhere I want to.
All the kids at school can't wait to go home.
I want a home to want to go to.
Ooo Ooo, Ooo Ooo Oooo

Ooo Ooo, Ooo Ooo Oooo
Ooo Ooo, Ooo Ooo Oooo
Ooo Ooo, Ooo Ooo Oooo

Now

If you were a drug
if you were a pill
if you were a dare against
my character and will
I would take you now
I would take you now

If you were a chance
if you were a risk
if you were the only
lonely road out of all this
I would take you now
I would take you now

I would take you now, now
I would take you now, now

Wishes are only good to keep me going
Dreams are only there to let me know

If you were alone
if you were awake
if only you were
available to take (if I could take)
I would take you now
I would take you now

I would take you now, now
I would take you now, now
I would take you now, now
I would take you now, now
I would take you now, now
